I am a air force k9 handler and trying to get some school done as well what classes would anybody refer or direction of degree should i head into. I want to really focus on dog training knowing how the canine mind works as well as medical issues as well.
Well, I did a lot of AKC competition obedience in the Cleveland, Ohio area and the National K-9 school in Columbus was considered a big joke. A few wannabe handlers took their course and it sure didn't seem to have helped them any.
But as a previous poster said, it's a lot more about the quality of the handler themselves than the school that they attend. A trainer with a good background and experienced in competition and training will do well no matter what school he attends. That being said, going to any school but the Tom Rose school or Triple Crown Academy is a big mistake, in my eyes - it's going to start you a path that just isn't as good as the real schools would place you on. And I wouldn't think that an experienced trainer would even go to the lower tier schools, it's pretty easy to see that they are not worth the money.
And Daniel, going to a dog training school without a firm background is just a waste of time. There is to substitue for experience - even the best schools can't really bring a beginner dog trainer up to speed, that's the work of years of training.
Will I already have info packets from Triple Crown Academy and The Tom Rose School. Are you saying that I'm better of doing some apprentice work for a trainer? I know where to find a good one, I just don't know the guy yet, I'm suppose to take my dog to him so it can start some protectiuon and get more advanced at obedience. Do you think I should ask this guy if I can help him or if he could hire me? Then go to one of the two schools I mentioned?
I know this isn't going to be a short term ordeal, I'm thinking maybe two years until I get situated.
Please any feedback from anybody that can answer my questions.
I just saw a bad comment of the National K9 school. This is good to know because I asked for a info packet and I think I'm going to disregard it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
What about Kromerhaus Kennels in Bethlehem, PA. Does anyone know anything about them? I was looking into their 5 week training program. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
