I think I have to agree with you on that. This dog was a rescue from,I will admit, not the greatest lines.I also think this type of behavior needs to be nipped in the bud right from the beginning as the original poster is trying to do to avoid a nasty habit.
Heather,
This is a sad situation. Even a dog of excellent temperament can be turned the other way as a result of agitation.
Since your dog is hard in obedience, you just need to repeat, very carefully, your socialization program. Reintroduce her to children in a positive way and avoid negative contact with the little devils that caused your problem.
You can go further and teach her to ignore the agitation by the children. That can be a very complex process. If you're not a qualfied animal behavior specialist, you might want to consult a professional.
I wish you all the best.
You are all right.. But you can train this out of a dog. This is were I spend most of my time. Honestly, all of the above is good but it takes time. If you want to cure the dog fast. Here is my suggestions.
1; Prong collar. Use a child decoy, or just go for a walk. The SECOND the dog allerts to a child nail him HARD. You want vocalization from the dog on the correction. You will only have to do thisthree or four times.and he will quite. Then resocialize him to kids with praise and treqats comming from the child.
2; Or you can use a E-collar. Not real heavy here. use a low setting. You do not want vocal response from the dog.The SECOND he allerts on a child stimulater untill he looks away. As he gets better, you get closer to the children. Most dogs take about a hour of this and they will ignore the kids. Then as above resocialize.
Remember the following is just my 2 cents and my opinions,
I dont mean to offend anyone but I have NO tolerance for child agrresive dogs.
The truth is (looking at the facts) the dog bit a kid. although the kids may have been "tormenting" him/her, he/she still bit a child.
The best way to stop this problem is to take the dog to the vet and get it euthanized. If you do "get it fixed" but it dosnt stick..then what are you going to do? Your lucky It could have been alot worse. IMO take the dog to the vets and get it put down.....its either you or a couple months later..animal control.
Pssst....Tamara.....
The last answer on that thread is like 2 1/2 years ago. It usually doesn't help to reply to a post that old, often the posters that had the problem are long gone.
