We were fortunate to have an interesting Explosives detector training event. An explosives company allowed us to use one of thier delivery vehicles with 1900 pounds of explosives on board. we set the problem up where the dogs had to search about 10 vehicles before it got to the target vehicle. The behavior of the dogs was indeed interesting to observe. We were also able to remove 55 pounds from the original vehicle and plant it within a different vehicle. It was really a beneficial training day for the departments involved, plus we had a good time. Just thought I'd pass on an interesting and fun training day.

The interesting part of the behavior was watching the dogs work that much odor. While all the dogs involved, worked the problem out very well, the odor must have been overwhelming. One dog actually stopped dead in his tracks from about 15 feet away, and then, like a cat, crouched and worked his way up to it, like he was hunting a field mouse. We had the problem set up, the first time, so the dog was working upwind of the target vehicle. I wanted to watch the dogs work some blank vehicles. The odor was strong enough though that from 3 vehicles over, upwind the dogs were still detecting and going to source. A couple of dogs checked the load in 3 places, never leaving it, before responding.
