I just learned something about a 10 month old pup from the kennel I purchased my pup and related to my pup. I purchased a West German "show" bloodline GS pup.
This 10 month old pup with his handler just passed the final assessment phase qualifying him to enter the "Bomb Dog" explosives training program at Ellsworth Air Base, trained under a team who were awarded the the "top trained dog" of all Air Force bases last year. After testing by a National Certified Examiner from the North American Police Work Dog Association, the dog and handler will be certified as a nationally Certified Explosives Team.
Apparently it is unusual for a 10 month old GSD to qualify for this intense training program. The pup was praised for his drive, awaremess, intelligence, obedience and disposition.
Question: What is your opinion of this program? To what extent does it speak favorably of this West German show bloodline?

Nothing. It could be that this is the best thing since sliced bread and it could be that it is nothing at all. Most likely it is in between.
First i should do a little debunking here. The training for all dogs in the Air Force is started and somewhat completed at Lackland under the DOD program. The qualification of handling a dog to a comendable level of competition among military dogs is nice but not necessarily a qualification for the expertise of the handler as a trainer or their ability as an instructor of new handlers. Nor is the standard for entry into that program of training very high in comparison to say the USBP's program (in fact many of their rejects end up at lackland).
The goal of cerifying under a NAPWDA system is quite variable as well and depends on the person running the certification. The dog hasn't gotten there yet, and even if it does it could mean a lot of things.
For what it means about the dog and maybe about the breeding of the dog is that it probably isn't a spook, it has play drive, and likes a ball.
Again, since there aren't any clear standards used as a test here it could also mean the dog has a red cape and a S on its chest, you just can't tell from this info.
