I received my tape a couple of days ago and now I have a few questions. Should I continue to play tug and throw the ball for my pup (5 Months) or stick strictly to the methods shown. Initially my dog was somewhat confused when I got the ball out waiting for me to throw it. I did see the lady without the string throwing the ball but I don't remember Flinks talking about it specifically. Also, what would be the best age to really begin the focus part of training.
He who has never tasted soap has never bathed a dog
For now, I would stick to just the methods on the tape. Especially till your pup figures out "the game". By throwing the ball away you are not teaching the dog that pleasure comes from being with the handler. There are circumstances where Bernhard will advocate throwing the ball, but try the method on the tape first.
There is no set age to begin focus work. It is all on a case by case basis. Watch the video again. Ed does a pretty good job of showing when a dog is ready to begin focus work on the tape.
I have a similar dog. She LOVES to chase the fisbee, but not too happy about flinks "pull away" game (even with the frisbee). What I did (with 2 frisbies) at first is mix up throwing a short distance and playing "pull away". The throwing really raises her prey drive to where when she comes back, she is more than happy to try to snatch the next firsbee in my hand. It seems to be an easy and fun way to introduce her to the game. Gradually increase the amount of times you pull it away (remembering intermitten rewards). Just don't forget to let them get the toy now and again when you try to pull away, this way they know they can win. Hope this helps.
