its a female gsd 2.5yr. i started training pp for about 6 months and i have been training in schutzhund for a year or so. a fr decoy told me my dog was all defense and a schutzhund helper told me she is balanced for a young female so is very serious i will admit she has a edge but i dont belive it to be all defense i fell that the fr decoy did not want to work my dog beacuse it was not a prey monster mali. like the rest of his club so i was just looking for imput
A dog with too much defense is a dog who will fall into avoidance under pressure.
A dog like that will probably not be able to be trained in French Ring. You really need a dog with very high defensive thresholds and good prey drive to be able to compete. . .or survive a poor helper.
I have an almost 3 yo American Showline GSD that will bite a sleeve but we need to go back through both bite development and confidence building for a little while because he sometimes goes into avoidance by biting the sleeve high or low, not biting it at all or just running and then jumping into the decoy. When we train he barks goods, he lunges and he appears to like it but oneday the decoy hit him with the whip on the flank and I saw a side of Aiko I have never seen. He growled as he spun around and really went after him. His bark changed, it was deeper and faster, and when the decoy ran in for the bite he bit so hard on impact the decoy yelled Ow!! for real. I was so proud of my boy. Now he usually misses the first bite and nails the second. I feel as though that is some avoidance too. I made the mistake of getting an American Showline Shepherd to began with but I liked how they looked, wanted to do some showing and he had a good pedigree. Wouldn't go back and change that for the world.
Too much Defense is a descriptive term and could be a bad thing for lets say Shch or Patrol work.
But a not so bad thing in Protection work a lot of Trainers for the Schc want 70% prey & 30% defense. Patrol dogs are bets at 55-65% prey and 45-35% defense. Protection can be 50%-50% prey and defense or 70% defense and 45% prey. The main thing is that the dog can shift to fight drive as a Patrol dog. In schs fight drive is wanted but not needed alot of Schc dogs can title in prey drive even when they are driven.
These are made up percentage they can be more or less, but having too much defense for Shch or Patrol doesn't mean the dog can't work.
Unless it goes into avoidance before or after the bite or it panics and wants to runs or won't bite again after the 1st try. Theres other signs of poor nerves thats link to avoidance.
