I like at least a 12 inch tug. Something you can grab at both ends. Hold it horizontal and make the
dog miss with quick close movements. I think
horizonal tug movements are much better at teaching the dog to target, than a vertical ball
on a string. But your mileage may vary :->
When my now-16 month old GSD was a pup, I never scolded him for picking up items (even my shoes or other household stuff laying around) and I never took anything out of his mouth. If I needed to get something away from him I would trade with him, his item for a toy.
I am starting to see the benefits of this on the field. When we do dumbbell work he will quite happily carry it with a calm grip for a long time. At home, he is happiest when he has a toy (or two!) jammed in his mouth to carry around with him. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I don't know if this will help you or not, but it may be something to keep in mind on and off the field.
