It is my understanding that the German Police Dog Schools have started a breeding program to produce animals that are more suitable for police work. Does anyone know more about this, in terms to what the breeding program entails, the registry-in general what are they doing over there, and how is it working out as a whole.
Northrhine-Westfalia plice dog training school has a breeding program to produce police service dogs. It has been around for a quite a few years now. They have bred MalonoisX and GSD's. The person in charge told me that 60% of the GSD's they breed are suitable for service in one area or another and 90% of the MalinoisX's are suitable. The MalX's are basically Dutch KNPV type dogs. These numbers i have been told are a little padded and they are considerably less when you look at the number of dogs still in service after a year. but, they do feel that the MalX's are a better cost saver and last i heard they are phasing out the GSD's and actually breeding the remaining brood bitches to their best malinois to produce part of the upcoming generations of police dogs. A bit of a sad commentary on the state of the GSD.
Thank you for your reply Kevin. That is a sad fact indeed that they ae going to excule the GSD from breeding program. It really does not say much for the SV.
I was at the celebrations at the 1999 Bundesseiger for the 100th anniversary of the SV. I enjoyed myself very much, the SV treated me as a dignitary. It is a proud and venerable organization with an incredible history of promoting the working dog. But it has lost its way.
