While my female pup(8weeks) and 3 yr old male are inside, all they do is play and jump around on each other. The male does not live the pup alone, constantly trying to get her to play with him, and vice versa.
My question is, should I eliminate this. The only way to seperate while inside would be to crate pup. I am getting no rest with these 2 romping around. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Yes, you should control just how much time they spend together. You want your pup's primary bond to be with YOU, not the other dog. While it's good for the puppy to learn certain doggy things from the older dog (assuming that the older dog is gentle and well socialized with other dogs), you should not allow the puppy to look solely to the older dog for direction. That is YOUR role, to teach the puppy what she needs to know to be a good companion. Of course you should let them interact and play, but let it be on your terms, when you feel like it, and end it when you've had enough. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Instead of allowing the pup to focus on the older dog for entertainment; you should be the primary focus of the pup's world now. It's ok to allow limited play with the two dogs under direct supervision; but at this young age of the pup, this is your golden opportunity to establish your bond and begin the pup's education..meaning just you and the pup. The more time you spend one on one; the better.
Many times an the older dog's behavior will start to slide when a new pup is introduced. This is a good opportunity to work with your new pup alone but also spend extra time alone refreshing obedience with your older dog as well. Their has been a lot of good threads on raising multipe dogs in the same home and Ed has a good article on the site about introducing a new dog to existing dog(s). After you review all of this feel free to post any new questions you may have. For now I will close this thread as pretty much you will read the same advice re-peated over and over again.
