I have a 7 month old GSD and a 2 year old lab mix. Rikka (the GSD) has been dominant since day one. She will not let our other dog play with any toys, no matter which one. We have LOTS of toys. She has to have the one the lab has. Every time the lab picks up any toy, she comes over and grabs it from her. She doesn't want it, she just doesn't want the lab to have it. This includes outside also. If the lab picks up a stick, she comes over and grabs it from our lab. Then, she'll toss it aside. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Patty
I have two dogs a GSD 5 and a Rottie/Pit 3.5 yrs old. The GSD is older and dominate, he does the same thing.
What I did when they were younger is train and play with them by themself, I didn't try to change the pack order.
When they got older, I'd hold one and let the other go out a fetch the ball, dumb bell or stick. The one being held really is ready to go after watching the other fetch/play.
This gave them a structured enviroment to play and each got a turn. At the end of the play session I'd tell them "Enough" and end the play session.
Now they can play together and will compete on who can do the obedience command the quickest or the climb, swim or whatever. I don't mind that if they are trying to please me, and they are not fighting. Don't expect that this will work out without you adding some kind of structrure.
I have a siberian 11 mo and a GSD 13 mo and the GSD has always taken the Siberians toys away, no matter what the toy is as long as if the Sib has it the GSD has to have it too, even if there are two identical toys. I would take teh sibe away for an hour or so and let him play alone, which he still does and enjoys, but after an hour he wants to see his buddy again. The GSD I have noticed over the past month has started to take the toys away less and less and separating the toys as to which dog they belong too. Sibe gets the stuffed animals and teh GSD gets all the balls. Seems they figured it out themselves...Except when there is something new like a pear or the rubber egg that sqeeks I thought they would kill eachother over that.
