Rain (2yo GSD Female) ALWAYS has the kong in her mouth and will not put it down, but when we go to get it to throw it for she avoids and bows her or nudges your hand away. My first question is - Is the kong a s ecurity issue? my next question is Kamatz (1.5 yo male GSD) cannot stand for her to be petted or have any attention in front of him. If we pay Rain any attention in front him he gets between her and us or jumps on her (not very aggressively) and growls at her alittle and whines. He basically bullies her away. I realize pack order should not be disrupted. Kamatz is obviosly alpha, but why the jealousy. He acts like fool if we take Rain out of the fence and play/train by herself. he will brake his neck to get to her and have his tongue dragging on the ground from running the fence line. What can we do about this jealous male?
You said she has the kong ALWAYS in her mouth. I use the kong for play time only. It is MY toy and I tell the dog 'play' or 'game over'. So I think it's an obedience problem. You also said you don't disrupt a pack order. I don't tolerate a behavior like the one your male shows. I would tell him with a correction that I don't like his behavior towards rain. If he stops sure I pet him for his cooperation. If I train one dog I go out of sight the other one and even out of hearing range.
Thanks for the reply. I was afraid of taking the toy away that it would supress her crazy high prey drive. Also about Kamatz being so jealous of her would need a hard corrections? This behavior makes it so difficult to be outside with them. we have a kennel for him and he raises cain when he is in the kennel so we can playball w/ Rain. If we do not restrain him he plays interference. He is not interested in the ball, he just wants to keep it from her. Should we put him in the kennel and take her out of the fence (out of site) when playing/training? Sometimes we use his jealousy to build anxiety to want his turn for bite work & obedience, or should we crate him & have him watch?
Taking the toy away doesn't suppress the prey drive. You can walk the dogs together and let them sniff around together under supervision. Don't tolerate dominance. But playing or training with the dogs you have to seperate them. So you can concentrate on each individual and work on drives ect. To train them together or play with them together doesn't work. I see your point with jealousy to build anxiety but I would restrict this to bitework only. Helper works rain and Kamatz watches and if he gets excited enough he can have a bite. Otherwise work them and play (fetch ball) seperate. Out of site and hearing. Concentrate on one dog at the time.
WOW! Thanks David that makes a lot of sense. I can't wait to try that. I don't think they are ready to be walked together since Rain wiggs out on aleash so bad (we live in the middle of nowhere), and am working on calming her down on a leash. I'm glad to here that correcting dominant behavior will not hurt Kamatz's confidence. They both are such good dogs, but need obedience work. I will get started on this first thing tomorrow. Now the trick is to catch Kamatz acting jealous w/in arms reach. He has 6th sense about when he is trouble. He knows it's coming and takes off! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> he also has a look he gives, but that is another topis. Again thanks David.
David I went home and corrected Kamatz when he would bully Rain, and I got some dirty looks, but he has already slacked off on the bullyness! When I would pet Rain and kamatz would come up I would correct and then praise him (and her) when he would go mind his business. Then I would call him and pet him and praise him. I did this rotation for about 15 min or so, and he is beginning to get the idea. I try not to do things that would change the pack order (let her eat first, or anything like that). I just want to say we are in day 2 of this conditioning and already see results! thanks again!
