Everyone brings up great points on this thread. The more I think and read, the more I really understand why our trainer said a good GSD would fit our family perfectly. Don't get me wrong, my trainer and I talked about this alot, but it's not until I see certain things in print and after bringing Koda home that it all starts to come together. We are an active family, we go for long walks in the evening, I love to work with the dogs so they are "busy" alot. I take them with us whenever I can, they both love car rides. Personally being as new to training as I am, I wouldn't have tackled it without Kathy, our trainer. She is a lifesaver. I hope you do find the right breed for you, if it's a GSD GREAT!, if not GREAT! As long as you and the dog are happy. I wake up everyday and look in Koda's crate and think to myself, there's my boy, isn't he just IT! Without that, I think raising and training him would be rough. Sorry if I'm rambling here. Good luck and keep us posted!
I think that having a GSD is the greatest! Of course, I'm a bit biased :^). But please don't get too closed minded about what "work" is for a working breed! There's agility, if your child is old enough, check out the local 4H dog program, if it's a year long club, has good trainers, and and they're good with kids, that is WORK, and teaches the kids a few things too! Then of course, there are therapy dogs, the dog just needs a sense of duty and purpose. The best advice I've heard about working dogs was referring to Jack Russell Terriers, but covers all of them pretty well, "This is a working breed, either you give him a job, or he'll find one on his own that might not be to your liking :^)" (like rearranging the trash, your landscaping, or guarding the trashcans from the garbage collectors).
Just decide what you do want, and what you definately don't. write it down, and go from there.
