Much is often banded about this dog and that handler as a great team but there is another member of this team that made the unit work.
Lets examine what is or is not a working training decoy/helper.
From a personal perspective I want to go on record as saying that any person wishing to assist in training working protection dogs as a training decoy/helper should head to your own MD and get a top to bottom physical to determine if your body can cope with the demands of working this end of the dog.
Be certain to fully determine if you have any pre existing heart conditions. In particular, anyone with a heart murmor be it slight or otherwise, do not, repeat, do not act as a training decoy without understanding a blood disorder called Endocarditis.
Be pushey and ask to be sent for an ECG as a lot of Doctors can and do miss low level Heart Murmors and the machine can detect what can kill a training and or trial decoy stat.
Although I'm not a Ring sport helper, I am a fairly new SchH helper, so I can add to this...
Don't think just because you are cleared by a doctor that you can do it. It requires good physical conditioning, granted the slightly out of shape person could work just one dog with no problems, but then put that person in a club setting working multiple dogs, they wouldn't make it more than 30mins. So my advice is have a good exercise program to get in good shape, if you're not already in good shape. Also, it's more mental than physical in training, so if you can't understand how the dog thinks & reacts, then don't do it, anticipation can save your life, but can also keep you from ruining a dog!
Also, if you're "slinging dogs", use your legs or you'll kill your back & shoulders <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Hey Mike, great advice. This topic although is started under Ringsport is trully one directed to the brotherhood of training and trial Helper/Decoys for whatever sport or real working application there is.
I am not so interested in propagating this skill over that sport or any other working protection decoys applications in so much as the base line skills all types of Decoy/Helpers must share.
Thanks for piping in as a new SCh Helper. Were all cut from the same bolt of cloth.
