FYI- I am not purchasing a pup in the next year so no worries about referring me to soon-to-be litters, but your collective wisdom is sought.
I will eventually buy a GSD to work in Ring, it is my preferred interest and preferred breed... however, I am not new to dogs but am new to protection. I have been training, showing (eek,i know. i realize the problems w/ dog shows... i was young at the time), working with and around dogs my entire life. (Was a Vet Tech at one time as well.)
My question: when I eventually do purchase Puppy, what are the recommendations in bloodlines for one who is new to protection but not new to dogs? I have been told DDR-Czech dogs will be too much for me but I don't know if I agree. Having had to throw my weight around w/ enough crazy sled dogs and working dogs in my lifetime, I am familiar w/ high-energy, dominant dogs versus the calmer, more trainable ones such Goldens and Labs- no offense, but there IS a significant difference in training these breeds versus other more "independent" types.
So...do I go for the bloodlines that will produce the working dog I want and concern myself more w/ the right trainer/helper and such? Or start off w/ a tamer line or bitch that will "learn" along w/ me?
hi,
from what i am learning, it takes years to work your way up in french ring. if you aren't after hardcore competition, than a bit of a softer dog would do. if you want to get after it, then do the research on different lines and find a club that can help you out. you can private message me, a friend of mine has a very exceptional gsd that is a ring two and on his way up. i could be wrong, but i think a dog from really good schutzhund lines could be favorable in ring as well.
