HI, I am a Police dog handler in the UK working a GSD in general patrol work and tactical firearms work. I also work a black lab in explo detection. I am after feedback from the forum as to the suitability of the Malinois in the role of explo detection. My lab is due to retire in the next 18 months and I am planning for his replacement (possibly a Mally dependent on my research). If anyone would like to offer their opinions, whether they be for or against, I would be grateful. The Mally is only just breaking through as a general patrol dog over here in the UK and I hope to try and show the versatility of the breed to our senior officers.
There are certainly Malinois in explosive detection. There are two explosive detection Mals in my area, one with the city police & one with the state police (Virginia).
