I am developing an intense interest in the Malinois after watching a cracking working Mal at a Sch training session. My question is.
Why is the Mal the preferred working dog over the other Belgian Shepherd types?? Correct me if I am wrong but arent they all the same dog except for the coat length/texture??
Coat length: The short coat of the Mal requires little grooming. This is an advantage for P.D. and other working people since they do not need much more than an occasional bath. THe so called "wash and wear" dogs are almost always preferred in P.D. work. On of the reasons Giants are not often used.
Breeding: With most of the other breeds of Belgian the coat is an advantage in the show ring. As a result they are more popular among the show people as they are seen as more "flashy". The resulting breeding practices leads to dogs not well suited for working. The other thing about the "show" dogs is temperament. THe working Mal tends to be "high strung" and that is not that easy to live with.
In addition many of the working Mal people are not too concerned over having "pure" bred dogs. The result is that many of the "working Mals" may be mixes.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
So really with the Mal being used extensively as working dogs and therefore being bred mostly working to working lines there is the same type of split that we find in the German Shepherd, (Working v American) that of working versus show animals...
Does anyone have the experience of working the other good working Belgian Shepherds so as to compare them to the Mals?....and given the right dog, how do they compare?
