You seem to have a working formula that works for you. But I would venture to say that you can almost predict a dogs reaction by breeded purpose.
I'm generalizing but you can almost bet that a Mal/GSD/DS would have higher prey drive then a Pit Bull, Am Bull dog or Rottie. You could almost bet that the Matiffs would need to be stimulate with defensive methods or just take more time to work in prey drive.
This is a precentage base scenrio, sure there will be some dogs that will be standouts. But based on these preconceived ideas is the reason the commonly trained patrol dogs are used, maybe not preferred, by some, but are used.
There are other factor here sure, but generally speaking this is one point of view concerning the expectations of each breed.

Chris a Pit really gets after it once trained doesn't it. But yeah, I do believe a GSD or Mal have a higher prey drive then most Pit Bull, generally speaking.
Lets not talk folk lore or in a different field gameness, were talking protection training, prey drive. If the pit was so hot people would be using them 70%-90% of the time, instead of the standard.
Don't get me wrong a Pit bull is a nice dog, and a solid package if trained right for protection, but by the time you get him going, in bite work or Ob the GSD is on the street or titled.
Now the PBT is the pound for pound king at 35lb -70lb!!! I know about PTB, but they are not the best dog for everything.

This may shock you but not all PTB are Game! Donn,
Do you post just to post or what? Your lack of experience with pit bulls shows.
Protection training is not just a prey drive thing. I'm not going to get into the whole pit bull thing and why they're not on the streets, etc.., this thread is not about the pit bull.
Thanks for letting me know that not all pit bulls are game...you must be some rocket scientist.
Then why did you comment, I bring some experince with Pit bulls.
This has been address a number of times on this board and others and the general opinion is the same, I was just using the Pit as an example of dogs beung breed for a purpose. I wasn't trying to press any of you PBT worshipers buttons.
This was a discussion about the use of defense drive in Mals and other breeds.
I'm sorry if your opinion differ so much from mines that you think you are so much smarter then anyone else and no I'm not an expert on PTB. And apparently you are not either, go back to your PBT comic book, and revel in your myth.
Any further comment from you and I'll just consider the source. Enstine.
If a Pit was so great in partol work they would the up and coming dog instead of the Mal. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
Could somebody get back on the subject. A different opinion about the Mal and defemse drive issue would be great and appreciated. Even if it was far different then mines or previous post. That what I though this board was about, not absolute sceince. Or PBT worshiping.
a friend of my has a a hybyrd dog of half Bpbt half apbt and this dog is not man or dog aggreesive. Loves people and LOVES to play tug. I think he has a lot of drive and a willingness to learn. Today we took kim to a local pack and he showed 0 interist in people and was egear to please
