My 11mo bitch has had one heat on the 27 August was not mated but when in heat her back two teats droped and "baged up" a little (to use a horse term) last night i was belly rubbing her and looking at her teats wondering why they have not gone away yet, so i milked her a little to see if the was anythin in there and a tiny bit of milk came out!
Now i know she was not bred and even if she was she would have had them by now and she is slim still.
So what is it? a mare of mine used to do this every summer as if to say that her body wanted a pregnancy, no harm, just weird!
Could this just be left over from her heat and will go away? or somethig else? Phantom pregnancy?
Any ideas?
I used to have a female that did that after every single heat cycle if she was not bred. It was inconvenient because I was trialing this dog and she would get very "bitchy", have lots of milk and be uncomfortable. She would even go off her food during this time. I had to use ice packs on her mammary glands before I trialed her at the Regionals one year. The only solution I know of is to spay bitches that do this which is not practical if you ever want a litter from her. My vet uses the term false pregnancy, I know some dogs even make a nest and start mothering squeaky toys or shoes!
Thanks for the reply, as i have only seen this in horses is was not sure if it was "weird" or not.
She has nor got bitchy (bitchier) or nesting etc..
Is there any health rammifications or is it just hormones? My mare that was so good at it stoped after her foal and she also has a better heat cycle now (took several years to be able to tell when she was in season, everyone refered to her as he!)now you can set a watch by her, thought it was funny to beable to "squrt" people <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Did you breed your bitch? of so did it help things? It looks bad having a young bitch that looks like she has had puppies!!!!
I hope this does not mean that she will be one of those bitches that after having a litter will "hang low" it looks bad like they always have a litter hanging off them.
