Hello Everyone:
Not so sure where to post this so here it goes, sorry if it is in the wrong area. I am looking for some tips on grooming the giant schnauzer. Does anyone have any info? I usually use a #10 blade with a guard on it and shave down the body. I am having a hard time with the head and also his coat is a bit softer than my liking and he is starting to shed, has anyone ever used a rake or shedding blade and if so what result did they get? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
--------
Brandon
Clipping the coat will make it softer. Only way around that is hand stripping, which takes considerably more time to do. When I groom my Giant (which I need to do either today or tomorrow) I use a 4f blade for the body. It leaves the hair approximately 1/2 inch long. In the summer, or when I am anticipating being lazy I will use a 7f which is approximately a 1/4 inch long. Both of these blades can be bought through just about any grooming supply, but I like http://www.neserum.com the snap on combs you mentioned do not give an even trim.
So far as the trouble with the head, could you be more specific? are you having trouble with the eyebrows or beard placement? I will use a 10 or 15 blade on the head and go against the grain on the ears for that "sarge" look. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
You can use a rake on their coats but most german coated dogs will do fine with a slicker brush.
If you need links to instructions I can see about finding some. Grooming giants is a topic there is not a lot of information on, they all say they should be groomed like the mini, or are set up to groom the american coated show schnauzer, but there are differences in coat and structure that will make the end reslt look differently.
