thanks for the link. im taking him to the vet Monday night. i just hope he doesnt need a lamp shade.
took him tonight, vet doesnt think its alergy related.
can you say Lampshade time. yes, lampshade along w/ cephalexin for 30 days it is.
hopefully this will take care of issue if its simply that it was something that has been bothering him and he just never allowed it to heal.
if not, well then back to the vet.
oh ya, forgot to mention their charge for the meds was $159 for 60 caps, good thing they write prescrips i can get it at KV for only $18.
lady was kind of out of it tonight, i think she may have been looking at the wrong thing.
Yeah, that can happen. They get a wound and keep licking it, never giving it a chance to heal up properly. The "lampshade" should help break the cycle and let it heal, and hopefully he will leave it alone after that.
well, i found out a bit more of what also could be the cause.
if the tip of the tail does not have enough skin over the bone it can i guess be irritable for the dog. the recourse is to redock.
i am hoping that by the end of 30 days or sooner once its healed he will have forgotten about it.
i think it just became a habit for him, but who knows for sure at this point.
A friend of mine had a boxer that did the same thing. Kept biting the tail over and over. It turned out that it wasn't docked properly and like you mentioned needed to be re-docked. I guess whoever docked the tail didn't suture them and the skin around the area kept breaking and was causing discomfort. Afer they re-docked it, the dog never did that tail-biting thing again.
the one thing that kind of gets my attention is the fact that once i take the shade off his head, when i can watch him, he doesnt go for the nub. you would figure after not being able to naw his nub for most of the day he would attack it.
but,.. if i leave him alone he will go for it like two days ago i left him in his room unshaded to get his food and i could tell he was at it when i came back.
had a puppy bitch I had to get redocked because of this. Basically they had docked her in the middle of the vertebra instead of inbetween the joint, so there was a half a joint and the skin was tight over it and it would get injured and bothered her so she would chew on it. If it is that sort of thing, it will simply reoccure until it is fixed. The vet took the half vertebra off and that was that. She never even bothered it. I took the tape off immediately because I can't stand not seeing how a wound is progressing - it healed up fine and she never touched it again - it must have been a great relief to her as it really was a focus for her before and I don't think she has even looked that way since!
