At one time Dobbies were too dominant and mean even had a habit of bitting the owner if disciplined too hard. Now its hard to find two that will bite a tug unless it got gravy stains on it especially here in the U.S., its rare that you will find a working Dobbie especailly here in the S.W. USA.
There are rumors that the GSD is declining, but you still see them monopolizing 60-70% Schc, Protection training, SAR, Police K9 units and Guarding or Security work. I guess 60-70% is a decline from 85-95% .
My protection group don't like GSDs they think they are too small, they like Bulldog breeds but still the GSDs are 60% of clubs numbers or the dogs that can do the work. Some of these trails where design to be too tough for GSD obviously not for 60% of club.
Some dogs look strong but take a long time to key on man/don't want to be re-trained, some are awesome tanks. But 60% are GSD and they don't recommend them, When asked why, they have so many GSD, yet they aren't recommended? The trainer states "We'll hell they are speedy and learn fast. They also have been doing it for enons, but they are not my 1st choice, you see they were bred to herd sheep".
Illogical because what was the Bull breed for?
Granted the Dobbie was bred to guard and protect, but where is he in the grand picture? We have the Red one I mentioned above, he ain't gonna make it IMHO.
I have a friend looking for a sport (AKC and Schutzhund) companion Dobe. True protection isn't a concern. Many of the American bred Dobes are loaded with health problems. Heart, skin, wobblers, nerve, etc. Is this the same with the working lines? From the standpoint of a wellbred sport/companion, are there ANY good Dobe breeders in the states?

The Dobermann as a working breed is almost extinct. There are a few working Dobermanns left, all of them in the hands of the very few dog sport fans who love the breed. There are a handfull of breeders who still breed with those dogs, against the dictations of the Dobermann clubs, who only promote conformation. Among those breeders you have Ascomannis, Burgstaette, Burghoff, Warringhof... there are some more, but the list is very short. In the US there is Thomas Barriano, who breeds with Ascomannis, Britt Reed (before Britt Nickelsen)= Danika, and a few others.
For 25 years (I'm 38 now) the Dobermann was my only breed. Now I work with working line German Shepperds. This is a whole different world. I have seen excelent Dobermanns, like Jano v. Bayern (I don't know if Mr. Lerner still breeds) and a friend of mine has Arno v. d. Burgstaette, another excellent working dog that can beat most German Shepperds in Protection. Unfortunately NOBODY has used him for breeding in our country (Spain) and he's already 6 or 7 years old.
On the other side you have the German Shepperd, with hundreds of working breeders in Germany and around the world with a common goal, hundreds of good trainers and handlers to workd and trial the dogs, the strongest breed Club, the best Schutzhund judges, the best helpers, etc, etc, etc.
What else can I say?
Regards,
Pedro.

In Canada there is Leidenschaft, who is breeding with Germania, Burgstaette, Jotunheim, Doberwache and Kusthoeve!
Although our kennel is young and our offspring are just starting to prove themselves (and YES we were late getting on the sport scene!! Get over it already!!! ) These dogs have tons of drives, nerve, stability and physical soundness!
We will not forsake the working Dobermann! (or Giant Schnauzer for that matter!)
