I have a question for Ed or anyone who might have a answer a friend of mine just called say he run across a man selling pups that was wolf/shepherd that the pups were 95% wolf that the dam was full-blooded shepherd sire was full wolf and they were A.K.C. reg. and price was $800.00 I hope I did not tell him wrong but I questioned the 95% wolf pups, if dam was full shepherd I also questioned the full wolf sire plus the reg. part I was not aware that A.K.C. would reg. cross breeds and I also told him that my advice is to say no thank you to the wolf/shepherd cross and if he really wants to spend $800.00 to contact Ed's web site and see what he could get a real shepherd pup for I told him that in all my years with A.K.C. I had never seen a reg.for wolf/shepherd crosses if I am wrong in my advice them please enlighten me on this.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
I have seen and interacted with 2 wolf hybrids, both at dog parks (oops! bad word but I don't go anymore) They were both very friendly and not dominant even though they were intact males over 2 years old. Typically though, wolf hybrids usually exhibit the more undesirable characteristics of the wolf parent. Skittishness, dominance (fighting for pack position), disliking of things being moved in their territory, noise sensitivity, etc.
I have yet to hear of either the CKC or the AKC registering hybrid animals. These agencies are not perfect, but this guy was selling you a bunch of BS.
Sounds like a pile of sh*t to me and a rip off to boot.... Wolf my ass, I have to laugh at people who tell me, "He is part wolf" Like I'm suppost to be impressed with a sharp, weak nerved animal like a real wolf.. anyone who tells you, "The father is a wolf" better go watch the nature channel some more and see what a real wolf is.
Who is this guy? Dances with Wolves?
Leute mögen Hunde, aber Leute LIEBEN ausgebildete Hunde!
I am very against wolf hybrids in any and all cases, but thats another subject. I do agree with Caniche- this guy is selling your friend a load of crap- How on earth do you get a 95% pure wolf hybrid when the mom was 100% GSD- the most it could be is 50% wolf.
They cannot be registered with the AKC. In most states it is illegal for you to vaccinate them, so they should never have been in a dog park or be around other dogs.
Advise your friend to stay away and if he wants a great dog, tell him to get a dog, not a wild animal with a fancy name- It took us many many many many years to get the pets we see today, they mnay be related to the wolf but they are not the same thing-
For starters, most wolf hybreds aren't. Most are husky crosses. Second, do the math if the Bitch is 50% wolf and the sire is full the pups are 75%. Third the AKC doesn't regester any type of cross intentionally. There was a registry that registered wolf hybreds (it may still exist), but the papers were based on the appearance of the animal. It didn't have to have a drop of wolf in it. I would say the person selling these dogs has a big credability problem.
True wolf hybreds are not for most people. They are at best spooks. They are almost all fear biters. They are very dangerous around kids. Ed has very good articles on wolf hybreds in the web site (here is one to get you started http://www.leerburg.com/wolfexpert.htm ). I would suggest that you and your friend read it. If your friend wants something that looks like a wolf, find a husky with the appearance he wants.
I had some very good friends that bred hybreds and they had rel problems finding acceptable homes for them for these reasons. The primary use for the animals was for the movies. I have dealt with many of their animals and they would never allow them off leash because of the reliability problem. The behavior was very difficult to predict. These are not animals for anybody but experts in wild animal behavior.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
