I have a 5 month old pup. His sire is a Rottie and his dam is a German Shepherd. I am very interested in doing Schutzhund with him. I know that doing Schutzhund work depends mainly on the temperament on the dog, but are there titled mixed breeds in Schutzhund?
Also, what should I start on with the training as far as the protection phase goes? I've already got him working in obedience and tracking. And where can I find a list of Schutzhund clubs? I live in the Cincinnati Ohio area.
I'd appreciate any advice. I'm new to all of this. Sorry if the questions seem stupid!
Hi Britni,
Yes mixed breeds can train and compete in Schutzund! You are correct in that the temperamant is the important part! I would check out the following websites for a list of member clubs in your area. USAUSRCDVG
You should be able to find a club near you! Work with a club and they will be able to test your dog and tell you when and how to start the protection phase, every dog is different.
Best of luck!
Britni,
There are a number of people that compete with mixed breeds and unregistered dogs. Actually, a guy named Jon Collins competed very successfully at the regional & national level with his Rott/Shepherd mix T-Bear. He was a pretty impressive dog from what I saw of him.
