The question really becomes does an intruder like his odds before hand and is it worth the fight? 99.9% will not enter to fight the dog after hearing the bark or seeing him and will move on to the next target so in the vast majority of circumstances you are left never knowing what would of happened. The bottom line is the dog is an instant deterent and unless you are training police dogs this is 99.9% of the time all you would need.
Ok, What Ed was talking about was barking... and what he said was that a good male with good nerves will not bark as quick as a nervey female so the best combination is a female that is quick to bark and alert the male.
I ended up with this situation on accident. The bitch will bark when the wind blows, the male is quiet. If he lights up, something is on and you best take notice.
Not all females are nervy, nor are all males calm and stable. You could do the same with a nervey neutered male and a stable intact male provided they get along.
Either way, no one with half a brain is going to come through my door.
Now, about the Doberman comment. I had two, both mixes of showdumb line and working, and to walk them in public was like being Moses parting the Red Sea. People are afraid of them based on looks alone. However, I wouldn't have another, because of the fact that most Insurance companies will either attach a rider to your homeowners policy or just flat out deny you coverage to begin with. With the Giant and GSD that isn't a problem.
Wizm...if you think walking a dobe is something...try talking a pit to a rabies vac. clinic at a school. LOL The dirty looks I got. Bad thing is she wouldnt hurt a dog or a human.

There are many GSDs that would never lose a fight with a man. Same goes for some other breeds. I weigh 230 and I wouldn't want to try to fight a good PSD or a PPD. That would suck. . .
D Vancamp all you would have to do is pull out your CWP and show it to the dog that would scare them .GSD do know how to read? You are right this thread is going know where. It’s like saying who would win a gladiator or samurai, a crusader or a musketeer etc….. It’s all theoretical. Any of the dogs mentioned growling or snarling should be enough deterrent. Lets face it most good guys carry weapons so I imagine it’s the same for bad guys. Now it’s not dog against man it’s dog against weapon. We are talking about a very special well trained dog that can handle the situation mentioned in this thread. It just came to mind, if it was that easy to have any dog protect you Nicole Simpson would still be here. Wasn’t her akita with her?
