Each parent (1st gen on the pedigree) contributes 50% of the genes. Beyond that it's up to luck but here are the averages.
2nd - 25%
3rd - 12.5%
4rd - 6.25%
As you can see, the closer in the pedigree the more important the dog is. I'd be more concerned about the animals that contributed 25% of the genes over those that are almost insignificant. Get off the computer and go see your dog's parents one more time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> .
a SchH1 is required for breeding in Germany. It means nothing in the show vs. working determination.
"Dog breeding must always be done by a dog lover, it can not be a profession." -Max v Stephanitz
Many German conformation line dogs get SchH IIIs. It is a training accomplishment no doubt, but many dogs can attain a working title (even a SchH III). Training a dog in 100% prey, with the same helper, in very controlled conditions is how it is done. These dogs will not engage a violent man in combat, they have been playing a big game with their friendly buddy the helper.
As posted earlier in a private note, that in the 50's and back there was no dividing line GSD was a working dog and conformation was just part of the process. In the 60's-70's the dividing line started between working dogs and show dogs.
Now there seem to be another dividing line you have the Sch - Titled play dogs, Show - conformation dog and the fading Police KNVP working dog.
Not to mention American breed, Mini, Shilos and Giants their all really different breeds. So are the working GSD titled and does correct conformation help in protection/police type work?
My dog as mentioned does not have the slopping hips, only if he stands a certain way do you see any angulation. Isn't the solidier rear end part of the working dogs conformation trait? I understand there are many factors, but isn't this one?
I'm just begining to start to understand this also! I don't think the working lines are flawed, it's just that people who breed them are mostly concerned about working ability, drives, temperment and nerves, then conformation whereas show people are also concerned about these things, but will (I have been told) sometimes pic structure over other things. There are working line dogs out there who are rated kkl 1.
