Tammy, you just hit on the reason the long coat is faulted in the WORKING german shepherd... the lack of undercoat seriously compromises the dog's ability to work in adverse weather, as he is intended to, as a working breed. It's not supposed to be about pretty or unique... it's a working dog first and foremost or it's no longer a GSD.
Don't forget the long coats can't work in the winter weather as well. You know when it gets God AWFUL cold her in Iowa. Also, long coats don't have the same water repelling effect. So inclimant weather WILL in hibit their working ability.

We have a young male long coated GSD that just recently joined the SAR team that I belong to here in Ottawa. It will be interesting to see how he fares.
So far, the cold doesn't seem to bother him. I haven't trained with his handler in the rain yet and probably won't until the spring so can't comment on that.
I do know one thing...I'm glad it's not me brushing the burrs out of that coat!
I wonder if the hot and humid summer weather might not prove to be more problematic for him with that coat??
I worked with a long haired GSD Guard dog (Shadow) in Northern Ireland, Never had a Problem, in any kind of weather.
Later on when I was working Specialist Dogs, a friend of mine had a Long Haired GSD Tracker, the SAS would not work with another team.
I see no problem with Long Haired GSD’s
Just my opinion.
I don't know if this would be relavent to GSDs, but years ago I had two St. Bernards, one long coat, and one short coat. The short coated dog shed snow easily, while the snow would ball up in the Long coat. If she was in the snow for any length of time at all, she just turned into a big snowball.
