I am considering a puppy sired by Dasty vd Berger Hochburg, a Pike son. My only reservations are about the hip status coming from Pike. However, Dasty's ZW is 83, and the dam's side has a very good hip record. Am I being overy concerned?
Werent' we discussing this on another board? Can't remember. I owned a Pike son that had a zw of 93. When I sold him, owner had his xrays redone. They were actually better than the one taken at a year (I had those too.) I would probably look at the females side to find stronger hips than a bunch of a2 and a3 to try to put the odds in my favor. But hips are always a crap shoot. I've seen ofa excellent's bred and all been bad hips.
Yep, on another list. The sire's 83 and the dam's 78 if I remember correctly...this is her first breeding so I don't know how she produced, but her background is almost all in the 70's. So maybe I'm being a little overcautious.
Just check out the info. how old is the dog? do you have their sz numbers? I can see if I can find my genetics cd at home and see what the littermates xrayed as.
From what I have seen from the Pike progeny that the bad hips are coming more in his grandpups. I know several Pike sons that have good hips and when bred the litters hips are not the best out of several different bitches of different bloodlines. But genetics are a crapshoot and environment does play a huge role so if you like the pup and the parents are clear then I (personally) would purchase the pup.
One thing to remember about the ZW is that it is an untried and unproven hip system. I give the SV credit for trying to step up and do more to diminish the incidence of CHD. But, don't put too much faith in what amounts to a large scale experiment. Take everything into account. Great hips in crap temperment just means a problem that lasts longer. The reality is that I put a lot of dogs on the street with a variety of hip ratings. It wasn't usually the hips that retired them. It was age or other problems ranging from cancer to arthritis to injury. Singling out one issue isn't any better than breeding for gait or color inexclusion to other traits.
