I hate asking something not related to Protection breeds, BUT
-I heard one say that Black Labs were better workers-
-that they were originally bred to be black-
Is this true????? Are yellow labs, and chocolates something to avoid often times because people like breeding for these particular colors?
I know there's some people here that work with labs and might be more of knowledgeable. I didn't think it mattered as long as they were bred in the same fashion a Schutzhund working GSD was. (Titled in work and solid genes)
Did you know that if 2 black labs mate their can still be yellows in the litter? If a yellow and a black mate the pups will be either pure yellow or pure black, not mixed. That is also the case with chocolate and black breedings, some pups will be black and some chocolate. You never want a dog that came from a yellow chocolate breeding, this is no good. So it is foolish to say that a yellow dog and a black dog from the same lines won't do the work equally well. This is because the color is recessive. The only thing that might be partly true about that statement is that for some reason most of the hunting dogs are black. It seems show people fancy the chocolates and have bred a lot of the working ability out of them. In general your more wirey labs are the workers and the short sqautty ones are from show lines.
You will definately see more Black labs in the field than yellows or chocolate. However that is probably due to the fact that proportionately, their just may be more black labs in general than yellows or chocolates. The physical make up of the line is more important in determining hunting ability than what color the dog is. The hunting lines are trim with higher drive and the show lines are stockier and more mellow. Most people looking for a pet only do better with the later of the two. I would disagree that color has anything to do with a better overall temperament. I would challenge anyone to come up with factual evidence supporting this.
