Her method of "rejecting pups" was to crush them in her jaws. Usually a quick bite to the head after a little sniffing. We were not quick enough to get the pup away from her, and later when we tried to take her "welcome" pups, just in case, we were nearly "rejected" ourselves. She raised the other eight pups very well. . .
This is an interesting thread. If a dog was doing this it seems like it's a temprament problem hands down. The Van Camp story though is odd, because it would almost seems as if the mother was culling the puppies that she couldn't tolerate in her mind. Almost like a natural selection thing, which is common in nature to sacrifice the litter. ~Take one for the team~ type thing I mean. It's similar to the bird that kicks one out of the nest so she can take care of the rest. Harsh but yet necessary.
In some ways the Van Camp story seems like a dog that would have some intelligence in a way but I would assume it would have to struggle before doing this. Since dogs are bred by humans there would be no need unlike nature and it's hard conditions.
Maybe it goes back to the beginning answer where it's a severe temperament problem and they should never be bred again. I guess that's the answer I'll go with.
Maybe 8 or 9 years ago one of my bitches had a large litter, I noticed one was always alone from day one. This female had raised 3 previous litters of 10, 8 and 11 with no problem and no 'casualties'. Whenever I would try to place the lone pup near her she would curl in a ball around the other pups and put her hackles up--not at me, just out of general uneasiness I guess.
Anyway, that pup ended up dying and after it did she acted like she had with previous litters--calm and relaxed. This female was an excellent mother--she was one of the only bitches I have owned that would regurgitate her own food to wean the pups. I kept a male from this litter and I had to keep her separate from him for a LONG time...like 6 months. Every time she saw him...URP......she would regurgitate her meals to feed him.
I guess just like some people aren't cut out to be parents, the dog I mentioned when this thread started certainly should never be bred again. Singling out of weak or sick pups is not even close to what this bitch has done. (eating her whole litter!!)

I was there for this- such fond memories of Dinky (the puppy, we named him Dinky) He ended up sleeping on my chest for a night with no success. He made it through the night but died in the morning. I love that little guy
I think this particular dog that ate two litters should not be bred. There is something wrong with a female that does this, especially when the mother of the bitch did the same thing...
I have heard of bitches culling unhealty pups. The only time I heard of a bitch killing/,eating a whole litter, was a very spooky bitch, who shouldn't have been bred in the first place. She was orphaned at one week old, hand raised, poorly socialized with other dog and bred way to early. The owner was hoping to "make a few bucks" with a couple of puppies. The only good to come out of the whole cluster f#^k, was it souered the idiot from breeding again.

I think this is usually the case, I don't think that females that do this are always 'spooky' in a real obvious way either. At least not to the casual observer or a dude who is out to make a buck on selling puppies. (which is why I started this thread to begin with)
I am not against selling pups and making a buck, just annoyed by STUPID people who justify breeding dogs that have very big holes in their temperament.
