I know of -2- that were trained as PP dogs back about 8 yrs ago. These two were very well trained.
I have a female from those two. She is nothing more then a house dog at present. Could she have been trained better, most likely if I had more experience at the time.
She will bite/hold and most of the time out. I'm thinking of starting her on Tracking since Will Rambeau is positive Akita's can and will not track.
I've heard of Akita's being used in South Africa as Police Dogs but have never found any evidence that this was true. That included me asking in Capetown a few yrs ago when I visited there.
I do agree that 99% of any Akita I've seen has been strickly showline or Pet.
Umm... Butch, remember it was *me* that listed the website of the Akita with a tracking title. I just happen to be the kind of guy that likes a little proof to back up a claim.
I didn't say that they couldn't track, although their lack of tracking titles would indicate that to be true. I said that most likely that none of them can do the combination of tracking, Obd, and protection needed to get a SchH title. There's a difference there.
And I would need to see an article or some kind of proof before I would believe that an Akita was used in patrol work for a PD. Feel free to post a link and I'll be glad to post that I'm mistaken!

YEP!! Will I agree with what you posted. I too have looked for any info that Akita's have been used as working K-9's haven't had any success.
Butch posted :I think AKITA's are in the unemployment line of dogs.
Will do some research on finding any working AKITA's.
Vancamp! I agree on the GSD 100% for around workability, they are hard to beat.
Akita's are damn sure to hard headed for 100% workability. kinda like my employee's, teach them what you want and they do it their way regardless.

I still stand by these WORDS, however I will encourage any dog owner to get as much out of their dog as possible. Whatever the BREED!
Would I recommend anything other then a GSD for a person wanting to enter the sport. Absolutely NOT!!!! This is my choice others will differ.
Would I encourage a person that has a K-9 that they want to try Schutzhund with ABSOLUATELY YES!!
If the dog is tested by a qualified person.
BUT I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE AN "AKITA" DO THE WORK!
If anyone has any photo's of Akita's doing Protection please get in touch with me by PM.
And NO! I will not own another AKITA. Unless it has a SchH3 title.
To be honest with you I was told by another Akita owner that Akitas are used as police dog in CA.I never saw one, but a few people said there were, but I am not willing to bet anything on it. Personalliy, I wouldn't want Akitas to be used in police work because they are already aggressive and training them in police work can make them more aggressive. I posted that they were used as police dogs in CA because a number of peole said they were, so, you know, how many people could be on crack and wish Akitas could be used as police dogs at the same time? Hope this clears things up a little, bye all.
As per your list of dogs you are considering, forget the Tosa and the Akita, the APBT would have to be a special animal. For the casual trainer and enthusiast the Mal or GSD is going to be you best bet, unless you have a good deal of experience in training mastiff/APBT type dogs. The Tosa is completely unsuitable so don't even consider it. They are already getting a bad rep and a half trained PP Tosa would be a nightmare indeed.
If you have to have a Moloss type dog get an AMbulldog or Bandogge. Much more amenable to PP work.
Other than that your best bet is the GSD (and I don't even like them much...LOL)but there are more of them and your chances of finding a good one for that kind of work are much higher than an APBT or Tosa or even Rottie...
