I have done a fair amount of decoy work with them over the last few months. They are good looking dogs. They're good size and look intimidating with the ears cropped. The ones that I have worked with can easily do the work. No problem for sport. But they should not be compared to the Malinois. No real speed but you'll feel the weight difference when they hit you. Good temperament. If your a "hard dog" fanatic, forget it. My trainer tells me that they are a forgetfull breed, but I personally have not invested many months in one Beauceron.
I do think they would make a good family protection dog though.
If anybody is looking for one, send me a PM. I'll get you the info.
Thanks for the replies. Ringsport, do you mean that these dogs tend to be handler soft? I am considering getting one for Schutzhund, but I also want a dog that will be a good family pet (no kids) when not training or competing. I like what I have read so far, but I still have a lot of questions. How do they compare int temperment to a working GSD?
If your looking for one that has the behavior of a GSD, you might want to look into a Dutch Shepherd. But if I remember correctly a Beauceron placed in the FR this year. I've heard you have to be careful on who you buy from. As far as I could say the differences between the two, I wish I could.
I like Beauceron. I wish I could spend more time with the breed. Where is Jerry? He has worked some of these dogs.
This is what I have heard. They are a breed that has a very wide range of temperaments. (like most breeds, but more so) As far as hardness and working ability it is there. You just have to find it. Tough as steel here in the US to find one that would do better in work than a GSD or Mal.
I have seen video of some hella killer Beauceron in IRS (Is that the name of the organization now?) trials. (International Ring Sport?)
Good looking dogs, like a cross between a dobe and a GSD, funny looking with uncropped ears thou.
I´m no expert on beacuerons but I read on a webpage belonging to a breeder of beauc. in sweden that the main problems that they wouldn´t become more used as workingdogs here isn´t HD and ED problems, it´s because quite alot of them are a bit to suspicios of people and that some of them are afraid of gunshots. The best breeder of working beaucerons I´ve seen on the net in U.S is this, http://www.pe.net/~beauce1/index.html
They have mals and beaucerons from french workinglines and aslo trains in ringsport, they should be able to answear any questions about the "bas rouge".
I found several on the Paris police force in France when I was stationed in Europe. I found these few to be very attuned to the handeler and hard as nail but yet they had a very good social levels. I was stationed in Ohio for a while and found an excellent breeder of Beaucerons working lines as well as Giant Schnauzers from Europe really nice lines on both breeds. I was looking into buying a Beauceron but due too having to be reassigned I was unable to purchase one and being a new breed too me and not knowing much about them yet, I stayed with my Giant Schnauzer and the GSD I bought a Female GSD from Ed, a Natan daughter.
Sorry old habits die hard <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
The breeders last name was Cratty, from Marion, Ohio. He maybe able to help you with any further questions. You should be able to find him in the Directory.
Be safe!
