About 25 years ago Airdales were commonly used in our area (NC Wisconsin) for bear hunting. My vet at the time vowed there was no dog tougher.

How about a Jack Russell Terrier? Yep, there was one at the Nationals near Boston - can't remember which year - 2002? Little scrappy dog - released from a police cruiser with blackened windows - tape recording of a big vicious dog barking inside, and bullhorn cop saying "stop or I will release the dog!" - bad guy darts across the field (regular sleeve by the way) and door pops open - little white blur comes flying out of the car and does a very convincing courage test! Then handler joins the dog - and they proceed to do a very nice SchH3 protection routine to the delight of the crowd. Including all heeling under control, transports, grip work, outs, hold/barks (little dog leaping up in the air as high as he could go, barking on every rise) - drives, stick-hits - drives were funny because the dog was obviously hanging about 3' in the air from the sleeve - excellent, wish I had taped it.

We had a Jack russel that we protection trained. He was just unbelievable. The trainer we were working with said he was one of the better dogs he had worked with and described his bite pressure as being on par if not better than some of the MWD's that he had worked with. We never did schutzhund with him tho the trainer said he would have been great. He was advanced off leash obedience trained and we could out him in the middle of a rat killing spree. I really miss him, I don't think I'll ever have another one like him.

JRTS are spunky they thing they are white Dobbies or Giants but when all the smoke has cleared they are just too small to be a good protection dog.
You put a cape on them attacking a decoy and they would look like Mighty Mouse, Opps I'm telling my age. MM used to be a cartoon character in the 60s and 70s on par with Super Man, sorta.
But a 25lb protection dog, I'd take my chances with a Kali knife techniques. I mean a JRT would look like MM being kicked like a football too.

With teeth dern near as big as a GSD's and the attitude of a rattlesnake on a hot rock, I think you'd have to be Bruce Lee to kick my JRT if he was determined to get you. Some of my schutzhund friends refer to him as a Mini-Mal.

Wouldn't it be something if JRTs came the size of dobes??? Actually I think that would be scarey nevermind. You would have to require licensing or something, like with fire arms. lol I've often wondered what the market would be for using them for ppd in suburbia. for say, active people who don't want a big dog, but do want a deterent dog. Honestly most attackers, when faced with a JRT hopping around on the end of a leash would look else where for a vic. They may be little, but a bite is a bite and their teeth are really big for their heads. And when their "blood is up" they won't back down or let go unless they are told to. Imean if you are going to send a dog that size down a hole after a badger, "quit" shouldnt come into the equation. I wonder how the Airedale compares in temperment? The JRTs I have known have been easy to train, the prob is most horsey people are too busy training their horses to train their dogs. and the result is a dog you wish you could kick like a football. The prob with that is they are soo darn quick they are likley to grab your foot as its comming at them.

I used to train AKC with a guy who had 2 dogs, one was a nice GSD female, and the other was a JRT that he always trained w/ a prong collar, had a really BAD attitude, and was a Utility Dog Champion!! I always got a good feeling from that dog, he was a blast to watch work!!
