Anybody have any opinions? I've read they are a herding/livestock guardian dog which, in a very general sense, describes most dogs used for PP work.
Just curious. They are pretty nice looking dogs IMO and from what I've read they sound like a nice dog to have around but I've never actually seen one in person.
Thanks
I have worked with several in herding. (tending style...what the gsd was originally bred for). Really depends on the lines (big surprise). I have seen some very nice ones with GREAT drives. Others that are real mediocre. Haven't seen any do any kind of bite work, however, one I have seen in herding was more than willing to take some nice bites on the sheep! Owner was having a bit more of a difficult time as she was a very strong prey driven dog.
They were bred to originally work much like the gsd (tending). You will see them more often at the French Herding Trials.
Thier coat is hair not fur, come in different varying colors. They have some of the same pregudice's as far as color goes like the gsd. (tawny is the 'accepted' color...some judge's don't like the black overlay and won't put it up etc. etc)
In my opinion they are not as level headed as the gsd. THey remind me more of the bearded collie (think they are actually related somehow).
I've heard similar info. The way I understood it, years ago the two were often considered different coat types of the same breed, much like the Belgian Sheepdogs. I have no idea how much (or how little) Briard x Beauceron breedings have been done. I have seen a few Briards in the results of French Ring and Campange trials, but I would imagine they're more prevelant in continental style herding.
