Having read M.Fox, Scott and Fuller, Pfaffengerger, and a few others, I would rate this right there with the best of them. Steven R. Lindsay references all the above and more with his explinations of the hows and whys of dog behaviour and learning. The only drawback is the book is a little pricey unless you are a avid collector of Dog behaviour books (I am). I'm 0rdering vol. 2 tonight
****1/2 only because of price, but great reading.
This book as well as volume 2 go to the top of the list. For the truly dedicated trainers, those who are interested in modifying bad behavior and those interested in teaching owners. Thisw book tells it all and explains why , not just what to do.
Ron
My husband, who is the SchH trainer in the family, also raves about this two volume book series. He has a lot of dog training books, but says that this is among the best.
This book series is not for those who want to just be told, ala a cookbook, how to train dogs. As Bob and Ron said, it is for those who also like to delve further into the questions of why things work.
This series is not only the best I've come across in dog behavior they are also the most comprehensive texts on animal learning and psychology I've read. Only draw back is patients get insulted and annoyed at animal training metaphores. I am eagerly awaiting the third and final volume.
