Does anyone know of helpful books on training for a beginner?(protection, obedience, schutzhund, agility) anything would help.
Also a good one one on dobbies?
Training In Drive: Companion to Competition- Booth
Dobermans Suck- VanCamp
Schutzhund: Theory and Training Methods- Barwig
Fundamentals of Learning and Motivation- Frank A Logan
German Shepherds Rock- VanCamp
Decoys and Aggression: A Police K9 Training Manual- Mackenzie
Two of those I suggest you really take a look at.
Purely Positive is the book I'd buy if I couldn't get any of the others for a while.
That third one was pretty good, but it's all sold out here. You really liked Barwig's book? I thought it was awful. I like Booth's books, I'd add Johnson's book on tracking, and most of all, I'd put Logan at the top of the list (or another on the same topic) because once you understand the theory -which NEVER changes- the specific techniques for applying the theory come easily. Done the other way around, you're doing mechanics without really understanding WHY.
YES, I like Barwig's book. No, it isn't the greatest, but I think it does a great job of giving a pretty good idea of what Schutzhund is all about. Especially the general overview of aggression development.
For someone with ZERO exposure, the book is great. It isn't horrible. I do understand why YOU would think it is.
AND Purely Positive gives just enough theory to get the point accross for positive reinforcement training. Not only that but it gives simple ways to get the ball rolling with puppies. Super important in my opinion.
Geeessuus, at least I mentioned the damn thing.
A few more to add are "Excelerated Learning" by Pamela Reid, Der Schutzhund by Helmut Raiser, and "Advanced Schutzhund" by Ivan Balabanov. Keep in my mind very few books are complete resources.
Oh yeah and "Jaws of STEEL: the more pressure, the harder the bite. A Tribute to the Working Pit Bull" by Chris Valdes
