I recieved the new puppy sleeve # 860 that is basically the arm of a bite suit. Wahoo, the young dogs in my club *love* it. Bernhard used it on my young dog at the N.M. seminar and every dog that worked on that sleeve gave it a big "two paws up." - much nicer than the old puppy sleeves of the past. Definitely my first choice now for that step inbetween a puppy tug and a real sleeve.
hey Will
Since you're talking sleeves, I have a thousand questions. (I'm about to go to Ed's webstore thing and order some stuff).
I am thinking of getting a sleeve for Puppy man-can I use this one like a tug, is it indestructible enough for Puppy Man to carry it around the house without me watching him every second? (I have gone through many pet store tugs)
Oh yes, what is the difference between puppy sleeve and grown up sleeve? My guy is 8 months old now-what is a good size sleeve for him?
Hey Alex <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Yep, this sleeve would be fine for an 8 month old. It has an attachment strap sewn into the upper portion so that it may be attached to a rope or whip and use as a drive item.
We have 4 junior dogs in our club ranging from 4 to 12 months..everyone showed a strong preference for this sleeve over our tugs. I ususally grip the sleeve with both hands and make drive to allow the puppies to bite it, then as the dogs mature, I start slipping my arm slowly into it while the dog is gripping it. I am guessing that using this sleeve will really speed up the transition from tug to sleeve on most young dogs.
Hmm...I still don't think that I'd allow the dog to have it out of my sight. I think that a dog may eventually lose its interest in an item that it has too much. Remember what Bernhard said " I allow the dog to play with *my* toy- but it remains mine, not his. He must work to recieve it for a reward."
The size difference is that it's about 1/2 of the length of a normal sleeve...it covers you only slightly aboue the elbow. And it's about 1/2 the size in cross section also.
Okey dokey then. Puppy Man never seems to tire of his toys- oops-my toys-but this baby is investment quality, I won't let him run off with it. I just ordered it-it looks very orange, maybe I'll take it hunting.
Does it float by chance?
This sleeve is very effective in building drive. I think there's dognip in it or something. Puppy-man is biting very full and hard (and fast!)-something we couldn't really do with the tug without me losing a finger.
Incorporating the Flinks methods I learned in January is MUCH easier with this item. He comes into my arms easier, much less hectic, very eager for the prey, we dig this sleeve thing.
Definitely a good recommendation from Will, and I second it!
