I need some opinions on a good muzzle. I was thinking of the Jafco plastic one on this site. They look secure, but are they very comfortable? What size is recommended for a German Shepherd? Thanks.
Nothing fancy...just one that's very secure, durable, comfortable, and easy to put on. For now, it's just for my own peace of mind, and later I may want to use it for PP.
I have a Jafco, I don't think it is the most comfortable one on the market. It is secure though. I'd trust it with a dog that was used to wearing a muzzle and wouldn't fight it while doing some quick protection work.
Fight it meaning, try to get the F-er off.
To test on occasion the Jafco would work, but you should invest in one of the nice Fabro ones if you really want to do PP/PSD work IMO.
If you want an everyday type of muzzle, for instance like the one I have on my sweet little Emma when we are around other dogs. . .then get one of the wire basket muzzles. They are very comfortable and allow the dog to breath easy and drink water.
I am also seeking advice on the best muzzle and proper fit.
I have an American Staffordshire Terrier, about 80 lbs...Things are heating up again in Boston area as there have been several killed after biting, etc. I would like this muzzle to "protect" my dog truthfully...
I purchased a very inexpensive one and my dog is able to reach behind her ears and pull it off so...something very sturdy and trustworthy which she can drink with (I use bottle with squirt) AND to add to my wish list for a perfect muzzle...she's all white and has super delicate skin so something which will not rub her raw..
Thank you.. and btw I love the board..I hope to spend many hours here reading and learning..
Dee, think maybe you could better invest your money on some obedience classes and gaining a CGC on your dog. Having confidence in your dogs training, abilities and temperment often go alot further than relying on a piece of equipment you may forget to put on one day, and that's the day that a problem crops up.
Especially with a pitbull 'type' dog (though I know your dog is a different breed).

I agree. Get him a Canine Good Citizen certificate. As long as he's ok around other dogs, that is. That's the one part of the test that pit bulls (which an American Staffordshire Terrier is) have trouble with because they are naturally dog aggressive. I'm working on getting my dog certified in therapy work. She's a pit bull/chow and that's the only part of the test we are really having to work with her on. I'm just trying to get her to the point where she'll ignore other dogs while on leash. She isn't aggressive, but she tries to play with every dog we meet, and for the CGC test, she can't do that or she'll fail.
I do have one of the steel basket muzzles that Ed sells - the pitbull one with the forehead strap. I had tried the ones without that strap to begin with, but she was able to do the same thing your dog did. Gypsy can't get this one off though.
