To many people use physical corrections when they have a problem with their dogs. My dog also was like this when it was young, but he quickly learned that he had to calm down to get what he wanted. He didn´t get any food if he didn´t sat calm and waited till I say it was okey. When it was time for a walk he realized that he must sit calm if he should get out, if he tried to rush out the door as soon as I opened it, I just closed it, the same procedur in the car. To get physical with a dog that hasn´t learned this basic rules isn´t a good solution.
I didn´t used physical corretions to learn my dog to not jump on people. It´s normal for a pup to want to say hallo to people by get in touch with their faces. If you use compulsion when a young dog jumps on a person, the dog connects the discomfort to this situation, he don´t understand that the correction is coming from you, this could lead to that the dog get suspicious and affraid of new people. When I meet people who wanted to pet my pup, I asked if it was okey if he jumped a little, if not I didn´t let that person pet my dog. You could also tell the people to sit down when they pet the pup, so it doesn´t need to jump. To have a dog that jumps is no problem when the dog is mature, then you controll this by obedience. Just tell the dog to sit or down when you want to talk to a person during a walk.
