The tendency to react aggressive to situations or to be aggressive. Not a weak nerve psycho, but one with a little more attitude. The ones with more Guard Drive.
Simple analogy, the ones that act more like the Dutch Shepherds you see. Ones more "hot" if you will . . .
well, first off, sharpness is a trait, not a drive. And I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but I will give you a few examples within our little group...
Kora (WGR/DDR/Belgian working lines; 3.5yr old bitch) at home, really laid back, out in public, suspicious but calm. At training a raving lunatic (aka outrageous prey drive)
Femke (WGR/DDR 3/4 work 1/4 show; 10mo old bitch)suspicious, will bark at the door if someone steps 2ft into the yard and she sees them. Will bark but step back one step in a strange places if there is a stranger that she doesn't like. Very calm around children and non threatening strangers. VERY VERY high prey drive.
Kane (Czech working lines; 6mo old male) always confident, very calm mannered, nice unless he sense I don't like someone, then he alerts on them and will stare at them until they leave. If someone he does not know approaches me from the rear, he will turn to face them, give a 2 bark warning, wait for me to acknowledge them & him, then return to a calm but watchful attitude. (very good balanced drives and a very dominant male)
maybe some of that will help you out, if not, well it's some info to work with.
I think a good working definition of Sharpness is quickness to react to stimuli with an aggressive response. What constitutes "stimuli" depends on the nerve of the dog. A dog's "reaction threshold" could also work. Just my opinion.
Of course I'm biased, but I think the Czech lines overall have more of the package you're looking for. Sharpness and aggression tempered by nerve. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
