Is teaching a dog to focus likely to diminish prey drive? I don't just mean teaching him to watch the prey item, but waiting for a command before he can bite. Obviously it must be taught at some point, but if you are starting with a dog with lower prey drive, how late can or should you put off training focus?
I have a dog that is nearly 6 months old, and I am just now seeing his drive anywhere near respectable, so I'm nervous about doing anything that may inadvertently cap his desire to bite.

Simon,
The timeline for teaching your dog focus, I feel, should be based on how they are performing rather than how old they are. If you are still working to make drive then your dog might not be ready for focus work.
That's just my 2 cents. The are more experienced trainers on here that may have better advice for you.
