A treadmill makes perfect sense if you have a high-energy dog and live in the city with in climatic weather. I walk my dog 3 to 5 miles every morning and at night she probably runs a couple miles. This dog has to run or she’s miserable. What about all those people who have BC’s or other dogs that need that exercise or mental stimulation that are cooped up in the house all day. Wouldn't you agree Joe that a treadmill would curve a lot of destructive behavior?
Milt, I think if one can't get out and excercise their dog's on their own or they have a lot of dogs like in a kennel environment than I see it as practical alternative. I do think taking your dog out on walks every day like you do not only exercises the dog's body but it's mind as well, I don't think a treadmill can do that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I use a treadmill for my dogs.. In the summer they swim..and in the spring and fall they run with the 4-wheeler..but when the ice is on the ground.. they do the treadmill.. I use a human treadmill..it has to have a long belt for german shepherd dogs.. once they get used to it.. it is no problem for them. I usually run my guys 3 -4 miles every other day.
Well, neither one of those treadmills would work for my dog anyway as he is over 100 pounds and that is the max on those things. Boy, that guy obsessed with venomous snakes is pretty creepy huh?
My treadmill is a PROFORM..from Sears.. yes it is electric.. I introduced them to it with food.. let them eat on it.. let them eat near it when it was running. When I introduced it to them I put them on a pinch collar and a leash.. started it out slow for a few times.. use the pinch to keep them moving...I can stand on the side of the treadmill and work the speed and incline.. At this point one of my dogs will go on it off leash.. but the others I have to keep there.. they can run with a flat collar now tho.
I have a friend who build a stantion on hers and has a harness attached. But I like to use mine too! so I couldn't go that route.
