Our local police just busted a local ring of people who fight dogss for sport. They found puppies and chickens on the premisis used as bait as well as injured dogs. They suspect more activity in the area. I have been involved with a local trainer who has told me he used to be involved with breeding pit bulls for sport. Looking back on our conversations such as his methods on staking young dogs out all night, the aggresiveness of the dogs he works with and purchases I'm wondering if he may be still involved with this kind of activity. I have not allowed this person to do any hands on training with my dogs as some of his methods I did not agree with. Since my dogs are trained in protection aggresive behavior is taboo as they only see this as a game. They are very social, confident, posess alot of drive, they recall in every situation so I'm very carful not to upset this combination of quality traits. My other trainer worked with this man for a short time and raised some interesting questions about the integrity of this man. My question is should I involve myself with this? This person makes a living at training dogs and I would not want to be a instrument of grief. I have seen SV dogs he has bought suddenly disappear from his premisis. Agressive pit bulls as well a GSD's of quality. I believe I could find out more information by hanging around but some think this could be dangerous for me. Being a dog lover I find this behavior a little hard to comprehend. What should I do as a person who suspects this kind of involvement by a local trainer?
I would sever the relationship and refer him to the local Animal Control or Police as a potential suspect for Fighting dogs. I wouldn't even go as far as introducing anyone to him for them. Let them handle the situation. These people can be very dangerous. If he isn't involved an investigation will demonstrate that. If you are already uncomfortable with his training methods or dogs you have seen trained by him I would go with my instincts and stay far away.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
