You don't want to be holding her back physically on either a collar or a harness - that would be a strain on both of you. I would probably use a normal collar with a 20' flexi. If I were just walking her for exercise around the neighborhood, I'd let her go her pace til she's at the end of the flexi, then she has to stop and wait for me to catch up, then go again. Otherwise aren't you still going to be physically trying to hold her back, albeit with a harness instead of a collar? Thanks again Lee. I think we will go with your idea on letting us catch up. I'm ok with jogging but not everytime I go out.
We will try that tonight on letting her go ahead and wait for us. I will let you know how it goes after tonight. Your points are very valid and imho correct.
Thank you Lee! I just got back from our walk and your idea worked wonders! She was more than happy to wait for us to catch up. This was such a simple solution you had I love it.
Both dogs went happily along with this idea. I just used a regular leather collar and I had to use a horse lunge line for now but it worked great.
They will both be starting training soon with our trainer we have used for years. And he thought these dogs deserved a chance and so do I.
Thanks again for cutting through my confusion on explaining this. Simple ideas and common sense works great.
I would normally buy someone dinner or at least lunch when I was being such a pain in the butt......don't think I can on this occasion but huge thank you is in order!
If you ever come up to Illinois to T.O.P's please stop in and check out this silly dogs you just helped.
I also have a rescue airedale with a broken hip. Even though he has little use of the bad leg he still can balance and push up a little when he stands up. We do take him for walks using a flexi but try to limit the time. Hopping seems to wear him out much quicker.
Lee, Just a little update. They both went to the trainer today and we have been following your advice with the lounge line (Horse person here lol) and it has worked wonderful.
The trainer agreed with you 100% that she can NOT do a normal pace do to the hopping and suggested the same as you did before I got a chance to tell him.He said great advice you gave. They watched her gait and yep she is a hopper lol.
She is content waiting for us to catch up and it gives her a rest. We just put her in a sit until we catch up. So all is good! Just wanted to thank you again.
