I have an 18 month old female german shepherd, Cassie...I've had her since she was five months old. she came into heat the first time last october, when she was nine months old. then, she came into heat again this april, right on time. near the end of May, we (the dog, my husband, and I) moved to Germany (he's in the army and is stationed here). she seemed to adjust really well at first, but then started chewing things up and having accidents while we were gone. she also started to blow her coat, but that might have just been because of this terrible heat wave that we're in the middle of now...maybe she could sense it. anyway, in mid July i noticed blood on the floor, and i got really worried for a minute, I thought she'd gotten hurt. but then i noticed that she had come into heat again.
i was just wondering if this is normal, or maybe caused by the stress of moving? and, more importantly, if she'll return to her normal cycle and come into heat again in October or if it'll be more like January or February? i was planning on breeding her when she came into heat in april...we are scheduled to go back to the US next July, so I was going to breed her here in Germany (I found a really nice stud) and then head home with her a little early and let her have the puppies back in the states, but if this threw off her whole cycle then she'll turn two and come into heat at the same time, and there's no way I can get her hips and elbows x-rayed and certified AND breed her, and then she'd still be over here when she had the puppies and i don't really want that.
so basically i just wanted to know whether i have to rethink all my plans or if everything will go back to normal. thanks a lot, i know this is kinda long, sorry!!!
If she was in season in April and then started chewing thingss up and acting a bit funny in May she might have been having a false pregnancy.
Some females get this to a varying degree with some developing a full lactation and everything and some only going thru the chewing things up (nesting) stage. Some females will do it at every heat cycle and some only go thru it once.
My oldest bitch (14.5 yrs) just trashed some piled up papers and made herself a nest in the closet last week. It seems to be inherited as her mother did it and her daughter does it also.
Moving can definitely rearrange their heat cycles as can bringing in another female.
