Recently a fellow K-9 handler said that he was going on vacation and wanted to bring his K-9 with him, but every hotel would not let him bring the k-9 into the room for what ever reason. Myself along with the other handlers told him that they couldn't prohibit him from bring his dog because they are protected under federal law. could anybody tell me where I can find that law. thanks in advance.
The only dogs that the Federal Law protects are the service dogs. A Service Dog must be granted access to anywhere, including anywhere a person with a disabilty has to go. They can never be denied access.
The federalcivil rights law, the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA),Title III, 28 CFR Sec 36.104.
If your friend is not disabled, hotel owners have every right to refuse access of the dog. If you check the state laws in N.C. they have never allowed dogs in their motels.
Have your friend do a search on Google: pet friendly lodging or Pet friendly hotels etc..
There are hotels out there that allow pets..
Some may charge a per night fee/ or deposit etc..
Note: most do have weight limitations so YF needs to make sure what they are if applicable.
My GSD and I are staying at the DoubleTree on the intercoastal, Ft. Laud. Fl. no weight limitations, but they do require a small per/night fee. (HS 20th Reunion)
He will need to be diligent in his search, but it is possible..
Or he could call a local club in the area he vacationing and see if they know of any Hotels that will allow his K9 check-in rights..
I have usually found the Red Roof Inn to accomodate dogs. Not the greatest human digs, but better than dog in crate in vehicle all night.
When I do, I always always ensure the room is left clean and neat -- I figure the more the room looks and smells like a dog was NOT there, the better it is for the future for other dog owners....
There are many hotels that take dogs ,you have to call ahead of time and look for the hotels that are friedly towards dogs . Many hotels have stopped , that once used to allows dog, because of the few that spoiled it for the general population .As far as the law goes , i am not up on who is protected or not .Peter
