I need any information on K9 handlers and Dogs being killed while their dogs where performing or trained for the "Bark and Hold!" My department current uses the Bite and Hold and is asking about transferring... We want to fight this issue, for officer safety. Croas

There were a couple of Sacramento cops at our trial this week end. Who said that Folsom, Calif. P.D. was Bite. went to bark do to law suits. But are now going back to Bite do to the dog not taking a passive stellen which almost got a cop killed.
You might cal Folsom P.D.

Not biting the passive subject sounds like a training problem..... the dog should bite on command regardless of if it's bark and hold or find and bite. One of the things that you see sometimes that could get a dog killed real easy is what type of bark and hold the dog has been trained to do. You see alot of dogs trained in the Schutzhund bark and hold... which is just too close for police work. I think the problems created with find and bite dogs stem more from improper deployment than anything else. Realy progressive training programs teach the dog both methods.
I'm with Grubb. The F/B dog has a call off (I hope) and the H/B (detaining) dog has an override. It's all in the team's working ability, not so much in the deployment philosophy (although different training methods require different deployment standards).
Give me a scenario where a detaining dog causes a hazardous situation and I'll give you two where a F/B dog does.
For me, the most important thing is working with my dog as a team and not throwing him to the wolves. I believe that my dog, in any situation, will buy me three seconds of advantage and I try never to be more than 3 seconds behind him.
Opportunity always looks better going than coming.
