Besides the health issues, aren't there certain things you cannot do with your dog if it is neutered? i.e- certain shows etc.

Hmmm, I think it's really up to you. If you're not having any problems, don't worry about it. Some things, it won't matter cause he'll end up doing it even if you do get him fixed. Only problem I see not getting your dog fixed is what somebody else probably already said.

Stig, how old was the dog once it was neutered? I think neutering makes a big impact, if it didn't the protection world wouldn't over emphasize not doing it. I would think? I could be wrong. Now if the dog is nipped even at a year, it's better to wait for two, but nipping it at one will not control the dog's tendencies like it would when it's very young.
I have no problem either way about someone doing it but main point is if it's a protection dog, no. If it's just a pet it doesn't matter and probably makes them easier to control. For some reason it's makes them passive, or more so. GENERALLY is what I mean. There's exceptions in anything, that's just the laws of nature.
For example, nip a boy as a toddler . . . it will have PROFOUND effects on him. I don't know if anyone has seen the Saturday Night Live skit "Pat," but that's how it would be. It might not turn that kid into a homosexual, but he'll be very passive, non-assertive, he'll not be normal compared to what he'd normally be to his peer group as a child, and as an adult. Just my opinion . . .

Oh brother....
It's a personal decision, but in my opinion, companion animals should be spayed/neutered to reduce pet overpopulation. Plus, dogs in our modern society live very restricted lives where they are not allowed to behave in their natural sexual capacity. The urge to mate is overwhelming and beyond a dog's ability to control. The inability to fulfill his sexual urges can be extremely frustrating for a dog. I question the fairness of this to the average companion dog who lives in a constricted urban environment.

Well, I just have to share some history re:neutering to decrease marking in a adult male.
Some years ago my husband and I rescued a large(95 lb.) male GSD x approx 3 to 5 yrs old( tan body w/dark brown muzzle)who marked like crazy everywhere. He had no house training, knew no commands, didn't know what a ball was, etc.We think he was a gas station escapee, but who knows.....
Anyway, we were able to train him to be a wonderful companion and family pet, but even after neutering, he NEVER stopped or cut down on his marking. He became an outside dog as soon as we bought a house, and before that he had to be crated any time we went out or he and my other dog would have peeing competitions all day and night!!!
So, I feel that if your dog marks, be prepared that he may always do this, no matter what others tell you.

Well I think it's how a human would be if he was neutered at a young age, not a dog.
Obviously that wouldn't be the same . . .
If that's how I put it then it wasn't my intention. The reason I used the example was simply because it does cause certain changes, severly. Is it the same with male dogs, NO! Does it have an effect, I think so.
It was just a joke to begin with.
