Well, our 2 GSDs got bad report cards from the boarding kennel. We were out of town for a few days and left them in a very nice facility. No one is thrilled w/the prospect of having them stay again. According to the staff, our dogs are *nuts* (2 GSDs). When asked to elaborate, we were told that they are insane because: 1) They cannot be let out w/other dogs (geeeeez, we specifically instructed these yahoos *not* to let them out w/other dogs. This is not the freakin doggie park). Apparently, they have a snotty attitude in the *works and plays well with others* category. And, 2) They bounce around in the kennels all the time.
Acourse, these 2 have absolutely no issues w/humans and are very easy to handle. They just failed to fit in nicely w/the pet doggie milleu.
No mention of our male's endearing habit of throwing his metal food bowl at you after he eats.
We're still rofl . . .

Hello Stubby's mom, I reccognise you from REAL GSD list It is amazing how bad a rap a German Shepherd can get in the hands of a foo foo dog owner/enthusiast. I have a friend/co-worker who adopted a working line GSD bitch from a GSD rescue (I happen to know the breeder of this particular female because he is our trainer). She is claiming the dog is showing aggression towards the other family members, all the while this 15mos. female is sleeping in her bedroom. I told her that she was creating the problem between the dog and other family. If the dog see's her as "Alpha" and she sleeps in "Alpha's" bedroom, than anyone else is lower in rank. I mostly feel sorry for the dog. She is linebred on Crok and some other good dogs but she is a long hair, so breeder did not offer a registration and she is spayed anyway. Non the less, she was born and deserves a home that will understand her. I had a bad experience in an AKC obedience class several years ago. They were GSD haters through and through. The trainer had the nerve to tell me that GSD's stand they way they do because they have weak backs.....lol Those were the days

I was told by an AKC obed. judge that SchH enthusiats were biker dudes that wanted biting dogs LOL.
I try to find somewhere where the dogs live with someone that's a big dog person. Auster loved staying with the groomer that boarded her before we moved. The dogs stayed in kennel runs in the daylight basement where she had her grooming business.

LOL @ biker dudes Tell that to George Forman and Steven Segal. I don't think that either are really biker dudes, but both manage to own BSP GSD's. Maybe they didn't get their where to get a dog and what breed from AKC?

If I remember correctly this "trainer" bred "labs" as well. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Well now that makes sense. The trainer of this AKC class was very pro Golden and Labrador Retreivers, and..well..German Shepherds just don't fit into that equation. Per the trainer they are spook bag fear biters with bad backs, "I have yet to see one with solid nerves". Well she can thank all of the AKC and non registered free for all b/y breeders with -0- ethics for that. Our home however houses three GSD's and one police K9 that is a Labrador retreiver. He is a good dog but I have my preferences without prejudice. All three of our GSD's are of solid nerve and quality breeding.
It is funny, I can walk my GSD down town on leash, come across a pedestrian and see fear in their face. Not respect for a working breed, but fear of a "fear biter GSD" because that is what the general public hears about. It is sad. People should show caution around any dog that they are not familiar with, but this misplaced fear is rediculous.

Hey now. This place was full of *big dogs*. Ok, they were all Labs . . . guess the staff loves that, less work, turn them all out together.
My guys do just fine, they are actually quite human friendly. I will admit, my Mink gd has something of an attitude w/other dogs (ie *All Other Bitches Must Die!*) and does not score well on *Shares Toys Enthusiastically*.
My working line male is a love, he does like to mouth off at other males when he's in his kennel (duh) but he is definitely not a dog fighter. He is social in the extreme.
But, yeah. They don't exactly flop down and snooze all day, they have to know everything that goes on around them.

Sounds like you should feel complemented. They probably don't deal with REAL working dogs well. lol
I guess they figured when seeing them as GSDs they probably assumed they would act like Labs. Many today have the same temperament.
