i live in se. mo. and i am new to the dog buying business. i have been trying to find a good working gsd. there is a breeder in mt. vernon ill. http://www.vonhausmeyershepherds.com . he has a very fancy website with several articles in it that i am sure i have read before.he says he imports dogs from europe.i contacted him about buying a dog import he had on his website.he told me he requires a 1000. deposit before he would even tell me the price of the dog.later i contacted him about a litter of puppies that he had bought the female bred overseas. he told me that he required a 500.deposit before he would tellme the price.he has now started selling dobermans from overseas . surely this is not how every breeder does business? and if its not then how does this guy stay in business? do any of you know of any good breeders or importers in my area. thanks.

I'd tell him to piss off, or better yet, tell him that in order for him to tell you the price and further discuss your buying a dog from him, you'll have to require a $2000 deposit for your time.
In the late 1980's or early 1990's there was a guy named Mike Meyer who lived in Southern Ill. He was in the dog business. He disappeared off the face of the earth one day - word was he went to prison (drugs). Wonder if this is the same Mike Meyer -
