Dogs don't need grains. AT ALL... So you want to find a food without grains as a major ingredient. People often revert to what they think is a human balanced meal for their dogs, but in fact they do not need carbohydrates at all. Corn is cheap, that is why it is a major ingredient in a lot of kibble. If you will notice the front of the new science diet "natural balance" they have designed a meal that would appeal to humans, not what a dog needs. Meat, wheat, WHITE? rice, carrots, peas...
It's darn near impossible to find a kibble that does not contain grains. I know. I tried, and ended up going with BARF, in my attempts to get a handle on my dog's ear infections. Unfortunately, neither BARF, not a diet of a single protein source have done the trick, making me suspect that atopic allergies are behind this. We're still in the process of troubleshooting, though, and will probably be seeing a dermatologist in the future. Anyway, read the article that I linked to. I have found it to be extremely informative and useful, and I think that anyone trying to figure out what food is best for their dog will find it useful, too.
